Archive of the Month: BETWEEN THE LINES

Thanks for the comments, donations and suggestions in response to the last blogalert. Now that you've proved that you love me, I'm more than ever willing to show you the real - old - me, in this archive from almost 25 years ago.

It was in an era when I made dances about making dances, a sure sign that it was time to do something new - start a family, maybe? This one was to the music of Robert Schumann's Davidsbundlertanze, and featured a conversation inspired by Schumann's writer alter agos, Florestan & Eusebius.

Between the Lines
was first made for Leigh Dillard's New Dance Ensemble, with Will Swanson and two other Minneapolis dancers. This shoot - on 3/4" tape, linear (analog) editing - took place in the
Ted Shawn Theater at Jacob's Pillow, where I was lucky enough to be a regular off and on for many summers.

It's performed by the real - young - Marta Renzi, with two of my favorite dancers of all time: Christine Philion & Peter Stathas. Now that our expectations of video are all so high-tech, I suppose I should be embarrassed by airing something so low-tech.

But the music is beautiful - and hey, it was us, then.

If you ever bring me back from the world of non-dancing - maybe when I'm 29 [read 45] - sign me up for this remake. And you be in it too. - Susan McLoughlin-Cortes
